Naomi Hale

Naomi's Backstory

Out on the rim there are countless E and X class colonies. Most learn to live with minimal, if any, benefits of modern technology. Often these low-tech town never see visitors for months at a time(or longer) and many of are just fine with that. Others are not.

In one of these backwater villages during the 2490's, a girl was born in a luddite community. She was a naturally gifted technical prodigy, and the abject lack of complexity in the community drove her nutty. As such, her upbringing was marked with rebellious acts in the name of boredom and filled with disciplinary measures as her parents and peers tried to get her to calm down and conform.

She was barely a teenager when a ship landed near the town. Though she had seen them in the far off distance and heard stories about what was beyond the town, this was her first time seeing one up close. The crew traded a few supplies and stayed a day or two to perform a few repairs. During the visit they relayed news of a great civil war that had begun across the entire 'verse.

Much to the chagrin of her folks, she spent virtually every waking hour pestering the ship crew, asking questions about technology and the verse, soaking it up like a sponge. Eventually, to get her out of their hair for a bit, they introduced her to a thing called a cortex link, and a monster was born.

With the exposure to the verse's collective science, technology, history, and culture, the lure was too great and she hatched a plan to stow away. It didn't matter where the ship was headed, they were headed away from the ho-hum little town. She found a perfect spot to hide in the cargo hold and the crew was oblivious when they headed for their next destination.

Unfortunately, that destination happened to be on the other side of an alliance blockade, which they attempted to skirt by heading into an uncharted region.

She could tell things weren't going as smoothly as planned when alarms started going off and crew started grabbing guns. From the yelling she the ship had been targetted by an unidentified pirate vessel that was attempting to board. the ship shuddered as the engines were taken out, and a firefight broke out in the cargo bay as the boarders forced their way on board. From her hiding spot, Naomi watched the battle with the pirates. From her brief time on the cortex, she had seen her first images of people with tattoos and piercings, but these pirates took it to a whole new level.

The battle went poorly for the crew, and one of them dashed for the cockpit to wipe the nav records and send a distress signal. The ship's crew were down to a man when the ship shuddered again. An alliance ship had arrived and opened fire on the mystery pirate vessel. The alliance vessel sent it's own team of borders who made quick work of the pirates.

As the gun battle ended with the death of the last pirate, the stowaway couldn't contain her excitement anymore and jumped out of her hiding spot and screamed, "THAT WAS AWESOME!" and was promptly shot by the spooked alliance soldiers.

She woke up some time later in an alliance med-bay. After some time an alliance official came in to ask her some questions.

"Where are you from?"

"i'm from town. Why?"

"Which town"

"The town from the East side of the ridge, jeez, don't you know your geography?"

"Which planet is that on?"

That question brought the reality of her situation into focus. Despite the fact that she had lived there her whole life up to this point, it had never been 'home.'

"I don't know." she replied.

"What's your name? We can't find any records of your biometrics."

"Don't see why it matters that much." she responded flippantly. Her name was the last vestige of that life, and she knew if she told them they would probably send her back. "in fact, hell, why don't you name me?"

"Say again?" the official asked.

"I said, Hell, name me."

The official misheard her accent and input Hale, Naomi.

With the unification war building momentum, Naomi was sent to an orphanage in the core where she attended school for the first time. She found school only slightly more stimulating than life back at the colony, but at least here in the core there was plenty of technology for her to use, play with, and take apart.
