Local Nations
Aglarond- another nation ruled by mages, it has a large elven minority and many half-elves as well. The climate is temperate and most of the nation is covered by a large forest, the Yuirwood, and surrounded by ocean on three sides. The strip of land between the sea and the forest is extremely fertile. They have fought against the forces of Thay many times, so the people are distrustful of outsiders, fearing they could be agents of the Red Wizards.

Altumbel- a secluded coastal nation of fishermen, merchants and pirates.

Chessenta- another warlike nation made up of allied city states. The nation seemed very cultured, as libraries and theaters were common, but they were focused on war and war heroes. And despite having a higher than average education level, slavery was legal and elves were popular as slaves.

Chondath- another trading nation, but not as well regarded as Turmish. The people are more warlike and distrusted magic and wizards. It is a league of city states, ruled from the capital at Arrabar.

Cormanthor- a large forest where the elven nation of Cormanthyr is located. There is also a small human and halfling minority.

Cormyr- a good aligned country with a small minority of elves and half elves, ruled by a constitutional monarch. It has been one of the most prosperous countries.

Dalelands- a mostly human area of fertile lands and thick forests, organized into a loose union of independent towns and regions with varying forms of government, each area raising their own taxes and militia under the local laws.

Damara- a cold northern kingdom with rich mineral wealth but low population.

Dragon Coast- a stretch of independent city-states, pirate towns, and freeholds.

Great Dale- A human land, ruled by druids.

Impiltur- a wealthy kingdom, with a government of local feudal lords serving the royal family. The people are generally lawful and good and maintain and strong spirit of independence and self-sacrifice. They have strong mineral wealth which fuels their extensive trade.

Mulhorand- Another former empire, at one time it ruled much of the area, including Thay. Today it is a theocracy, ruled by priests. Priests are considered the uppermost caste and the Mulhorandi are arrogant, considering themselves better than other nations. The priesthoods split the government up into different ministries, dominated by the priests of the god whose influence is relevant (the courts are dominated by priests of the god of justice, for example).

Narfell- Once the heart of an empire ruled by fiend summoning wizards, it is now a barren land populated by nomadic tribes. The countryside is dotted by the ruins of cities and castles left behind when the empire was crushed in a war with neighboring Raumathar.

Rashemen- a nation descended from the old Raumathar empire. It is a land of magical places and spirits, inhabited by berserker barbarian tribes, ruled by the Iron Lord. But, the Iron Lord serves as a figurehead for the real rulers, a group of female witches known as the Wychlaran. Rashemen is said to be closely connected to the Feywild.

Sembia- was settled by people from Chondath and grew into a nation of allied city states governed by a council of wealthy merchants. It is a nation based on trade.

Thay- a dark nation, ruled by the Red Wizards of Thay, an evil and power hungry group of wizards known for their fire magic and cruelty. Slavery is a major part of society, but undead servants are also used as laborers. Gladiatorial games are the major form of entertainment and Thayan pit fighters are the most formidable in the world. Thay has waged many (unsuccessful) campaigns of conquest against their neighbors.

Thesk- A wealthy land populated by humans, gnomes and civilized orcs. Each town is ruled by a mayor, who is the richest local, and the country is ruled by a council of Mayors. The great Golden Way trade road runs from Thesk to Kara-Tur.

Turmish- a peaceful human republic, but known for its mercenary companies and fair dealing traders. It is one of the few nations south of the Sea of Fallen Stars to outlaw slavery.

Vaasa- a poor land, formerly ruled by succession of ruling families, generally trading top place by betrayal or conquest. Many years ago a human warlord appeared with a mercenary army, slew the current ruling family and took control in a reign of terror. She is believed to be some kind of immortal, she has aged very little and has survived many attempts on her life (GM's note- changed from the original story of a lich).
