Joan

Played by Nick.

Joan is a half-elven cleric of the human god Lathander. Her father was human, Arik Samter, from Impiltur. he was an herbalist and potion maker travelling with the Waves of Thyme trading company out of the city of Hlammach. Arik had a distinguishing feature; a streak of white hair above his left eye, caused by a scar on his scalp. It bothered him, so he almost always kept his head covered.

An half-elf child in a human environment, Joan was given to a monastery before the age of one. She has spent her entire life at [X] monestary, under the "care" of head abbot Cesare.

Joan, along with most other priestesses at the monastery, were never allowed to leave. Abbot Cesare was a cruel man, although the priestesses would not have known better. All female, the priestesses at Monestary [X] were regularly abused. Things such as speaking without permission in conversation, or taking too long to finish a chore, even seen socializing with others might have been met with something as mild as stern words, or something as extreme as flagellation.

The head priestess Mary (who had no real power besides a greater than average influence over the abbot) was the only one to show any kindness to her fellow priestesses at the monastery. Often mandating they spend time praying in solitude after various punishments by the abbot. The real intent of which being to heal any wounds, physical or psychological, that they may have sustained.

Though the priestesses of [X] monastery had only ever known the life they had to endure under Abbot Cesare, time marches on. Cesare was called up towards a higher position in his religious discipline (perhaps to make lives horrible somewhere else), and in the period before a new Abbot or Abbess was appointed to the Monastery, head priestess Mary was appointed to temporary overseer of the Monastery. Mary did not have the connections of the previous abbot, so she used her priestesses to carry out the duties previously outsourced by the Abbot before her. Mary, in her kindness, hoped that exposure to the world (that the priestesses had never seen prior to the removal of Abbot Cesare) would help what were her surrogate daughters to grow.
