The party is still in Saerloon after Akari gets her message. Joan and Furath go to the local Waves of Thyme headquarters to ask after their father, but are told they'll need to make an appointment and come back. Furath is able to secure an appointment for the following day and they leave. Aria is out listening for rumors about her brother and Dolomoth is shopping when his fey patron, Culathos, speaks to him and tells him to return to his room so Culathos can visit him. Joan and Furath also return to the inn and Akari and Prim are hired to go recover some lost funds. Culathos appears to Dolomoth and gives him a mission. He wants Dolomoth to impersonate Captain Riffin Stomes from the Sea Dragon, Rostok's ship that they raided. Dolomoth will use Stomes ring and his Mask of Many Faces ability to pass himself off as Stomes. Dolomoth will send a letter to a local criminal group, a Zhentarim cell, that Rostok is in contact with, arrange a meeting, and then kill them, but leave one witness to say that Stomes attacked. However, since he is pretending to be a sea captain, he can't use any of his warlock powers where they can be seen. Culathos gives him some of the previously stolen papers to use as an example. Dolomoth calls in Joan, Furath and Aria to help. Aria forges the papers. Culathos changes into Stomes and goes across town and checks into an expensive hotel near the port and has the hotel's valet deliver his message to the locals. They agree to meet Stomes tomorow at 5pm, Dolomoth will bring Aria, Joan and Furath as his assistants and bodyguards. Aria borrows Prim's mens' clothes to disguise herself as a man, Joan dresses in non-descript clothes instead of her vestments. Furath also uses the Find Familiar spell to get a fey spirit squirrel as a familiar.
The next morning, Joan and Furath return to Waves of Thymes and speak to one of the administrators about their father. When she hears the name, she flinches and brings out whiskey and glasses and pours everyone a round. She tells them Arik was lost at sea five years ago, while travelling to Turmish, his ship was taken by pirates. Some of the crew and cargo turned up on the black market, a pirate named bin Samak of the Badala was responsible. They don't know if Arik is dead, he may have been sold into slavery. Captain bin Samak and the Badala are still active on the Sea of Fallen Stars. Arik's white streak in his hair made him memorable, perhaps he could still be located. She has her assistant bring in a priest of Helm and asks if they are willing to verify their statements under a Zone of Truth spell. They agree and she verifies they have told her the truth and dismisses the priest. She pulls out a piece of paper and a coin bag and tells them as the only people who have shown up claiming to be Arik's heirs, she is giving them the money he had on account, they each get over 400 gold pieces. The paper is an authorization to show to other Waves of Thyme offices to get their cooperation in their search. They thank her and depart.
Dinner time approaches and Dolomoth leads his party to the restaurant that the Zhentarrim use as a cover business. Dolomoth casts Hex to have ready, Joan casts Aid and Aria summons the ghost of former warrior to protect Dolomoth and Furath. They are taken to a private dining area and through a secret passage to go upstairs to the office of the local boss, Badeon Mavesk. Mavesk is waiting with two of his lieutenants and his "confidential secretary", Miss Rassei. Drinks are served and everyone is seated and Mavesk asks to see "Stomes'" ring as proof of his identity. Dolomoth produces it and Mavesk taps it with a wand and agrees it's genuine. He asks them about the nature of their visit. Dolomoth, as Stomes, explains that Mavesk's life is danger. When Mavesk asks how they know, Dolomoth draws his sword like it is a clue. Mavesk's eyes narrow at the short sword, but before he can say anything, Dolomoth stabs him. The adventurers and criminals come to their feet and "Miss Rassei" sheds her illusion, she is a priestess of Cyric! She flings a black Guiding Bolt at Dolomoth, but misses. Aria attacks the bald lietenant, Dolomoth fights Mavesk and Furath hits the priestess with Firebolt spells and drops her. Joan fights the guard at the door and casts Spiritual Weapon to help Aria. Furath switches targets to Mavesk and after the Spiritual Weapon finishes the one aide, the other and Mavesk are beating Dolomoth easily since he can only use his Hex and is only an adequate swordsman. Aria hits Mavesk with Dissonant Whispers, driving him away from Dolomoth. They finish Mavesk and Dolomoth unleashes Eldritch Blasts on the other aide, a one-eyed rogue. Another guard comes in and Joan engages him. Furath uses his familiar to distract foes to make them eaiser to hit. The one-eyed aide is killed and the second guard flees. They close the door and barricade it and Furath casts Detect Magic. Joan uses Spare the Dying on the bald lieutenant so he will live and be their winess that Rostok's man attacked first, and he was knocked out before Dolomoth cast any spells. They take coins, magic swords, a potion, a cloak and armor from the Zhentarrim and Furath spots a warded drawer in the desk. He casts Dispel Magic to destroy the Glyph of Warding. They ransack the desk, taking more money and papers. Furath spotted a secret door, it goes to another hidden passage that leads to a secret door in the outside wall with a rope ladder. They open the door, it is on the back alley. They hear shouts and city guard whistles approaching. They kick down the rope ladder and climb down to the alley. The party escapes into the night with help on an Invisibility spell.
They return to their inn and Prim and Akari are back from their mission. Dolomoth takes the magic leather armor, Joan takes the Potion of Fire Giant Strength and Furath takes a Cloak of Protection. They decide to sell the priestess' short sword, but Mavesk's long sword is a Dragon Slayer sword! Prim is the only one who can use it with skill, she will hold onto it for now. Dolomoth flips through the papers he took and Prim notices that they are sealed with a symbol of a winged snake pressed into black wax. It is the same symbol that she saw on the tattooed man who killed her father! Dolomoth explains it is the mark of the Zhentarim, the Zhentarim must be behind the plot to kill Prim's family!
Culathos appears and takes the documents and praises Dolomoth for his work, especially under the handicap of not being able to use his powers. He takes the stolen documents and disappears.
