Fast Star Travel

⁶There's a chart in the old Star Wars D6 books with travel times in hyperspace between the worlds we see in the movies and a few that were mentioned. And because they never specify times in the movies, it was acceptable that the chart said the Millenium Falcon took 3.5 days (standard time 7 days) to go from Tatooine to Alderaan. When the second edition came out, that dropped to seven hours! The only thing in the movies that was an issue was stuff like Luke going from Hoth to Dagobah in his X-wing. And then from Dagobah to Bespin. Even the new chart said that was over two days. That's a long time in a small fighter. There's the main characters' trip to Endor in a Lambda shuttle in Return of the Jedi, but we don't know how far they travelled or how long it took. If Home One was with the Rebel fleet that may have been (per Vader's comment "What about the reports of the Rebel fleet massing near Sullust?") near Sullust, then the new chart says 19 hours from Sullust to Endor, which isn't terrible.

But then we got lots of books (particularly the X-Wing series) where fighters are making what seem like long jumps but are only hours long. But we don't really know how far they are. Star Wars never says "It's 30,000 light years to Alderaan, we'll be there in six hours"

Then came Rogue One. They make lots of trips in U-wings and shuttles, which certainly aren't set up for journeys that last a long time. Krennic goes to Mustafar for a five minute conversation with Vader. There's no way that trip took days. Then there's the attack on Scarife and both the Rebels and Empire send reinforcements which seem to arrive in less than half an hour, maybe minutes. I think travel in Rogue One is too short, but travel is more likely hours, not days.

I found an article on Wookiepedia that said it's 16 hours to go 5,000 light years from Coruscant to Alderaan (16 hours matches SWd62E) and that is slow because of the stellar density in the core. It also says the trip from Tatooine to Alderaan is less than that despite the greater distance. According to most maps (mostly fan-made, and assuming the Star Wars galaxy is about the size of the Milky Way, i.e., 100,000 light years across), Tatooine and Alderaan are about 35,000 light years apart, so about seven times as far as Alderaan and Coruscant.

If my estimates are correct, and the chart in SW2E is accurate, standard speed is at least 5,000 light years per HOUR. That's Earth to Alpha Centauri, four light years, in THREE SECONDS!! However, when travelling average distances, your course is going to be a crazy zig zag around stars' gravity wells. There are a few points where they discuss that there are hyperspace routes that take advantage of areas of lower than average stellar densities to make better times. Supposedly, there are some routes where it is faster to go from system A to B to C rather than direct from A to C. So, routes are more likely to be longer than the direct line of 5,000LY per hour because the course is going to vary, it's not going to be anywhere close to a straight line.

EDIT- Here's an example. Coruscant to Tatooine direct is over 22 days. But Coruscant to Alderaan is 16 hours and Alderaan to Tatooine is 7 hours (!) making the route 23 hours total (!!).

More Hyperspace notes
If you drop out of hyperdrive on purpose, you will come out in deep space, probably light years from any star. Since the computer plots courses to stay away from known objects, the routes would be well outside all systems to make sure you don't hit something in distant orbit around the stars you are passing. You would not come out in a system unless your route was seriously flawed. So, yes, the setup in Marooned was totally unrealistic. And I admit it. If you detect an imminent failure of your hyperdrive, you can drop out of hyperspace safely, although the crew will need to make a roll and may take damage. Most ships have a smaller, much slower hyperdrive backup for cases like this. Fighters like X-wings do not have a backup. Once you drop out, you need to do some serious calculations to figure out where you are before you can plot your next jump. But you will have a rough idea.
If your hyperdrive is destroyed in hyperspace (say from a bomb), then the ship is pretty much destroyed.

Microjumps
In one book (Han Solo at Star's End), Han uses a microjump to leave a system and make it appear like the ship is jumping in for the first time. That would be somewhat difficult. At standard hyperdrive speed, I am estimating a ship goes 5,000 light years in an hour or 1.39 light years in a second. In a millisecond (1/1000th of a second) a ship travels about 140 AU or twice the diameter of Neptune's orbit. Jumping within a system is unlikely, but you could jump away and then back in.

Fuel Consumption
For the game, I'm going to use the rules (with one change) from the Tramp Freighters Galaxy Guide. An average small freighter has 50 fuel cells. An hour of combat or atmospheric flying, jumping into hyperspace or 15 minutes of hyperspace flight, or five hours of interplanetary flight, consumes one fuel cell. Therefore, a small ship can take off and fly away from the planet, jump into hyperspace, travel up to 12 hours and land on another planet with maybe a partial fuel cell left.

Hyperspace Notes Updated
I've been thinking about the routing issue, and I think that's one of those things that sounds reasonable but doesn't hold up when you do the math. After doing some number crunching, if we assume safe navigation practice is to avoid passing through a stellar system, and giving a system a 60 astronomical unit diameter, there is only about a 2% chance of hitting a stellar system on a 5000 light year journey.
